History of the group

The Cambridge Statistics Discussion Group was founded in 1972 as a result of an initiative from what is now Anglia Ruskin University. At that time there were several research units in the Cambridge area employing only one statistician, and it was felt that some way of enabling local statisticians to get to know each other and discuss practical problems arising from their work might be of interest. This indeed proved to be the case and, although fewer statisticians now work alone, the Discussion Group continues in much the same informal way as when it first started: meetings on a wide variety of topics with speakers drawn mainly from within the membership, and welcoming anyone with an interest in statistics.
