Congratulations to Bob Carlyon and Francois Guerit, MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, University of Cambridge, who have been awarded a grant from the Royal National Institute for Deaf People to study the changes that occur in the months after a deaf patient’s hearing has been restored by a cochlear implant.
Bob commented “We know that after the implant is first switched on the loudness of sounds gradually decrease and patients get better at understanding speech. Our research will determine the neural bases for these changes, and we hope this information will help doctors, audiologists, and patients get the most out of their implants”.
The grant is help in collaboration with Manohar Bance, who is a cochlear implant surgeon at Addenbrooke’s hospital, Cambridge, and Debi Vickers, who is a senior scientist in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Cambridge.
