Abstract:
This article attempts to describe the field of cognitive neuropsychology for readers who are not specialists in the field. Focussing on the domain of semantic memory (our knowledge of the meanings of objects and words), the article describes a patient with severely impaired semantic memory due to a progressive focal dementing illness. Various aspects of the patient's cognitive processing are described which are either independent of, or significantly disrupted by, her profound semantic memory loss.
