Research areas
What are the nerve cell circuits that enable us to speak and understand? My colleagues and I address facets of this question by theorising, experimenting and modelling. Individual projects focus on the binding between a word's form and meaning (more precisely: between the brain correlates of word form and word meaning), the binding between different words and morphemes in well-formed syntactic strings (likewise) and the relationship between perception, action and language mechanisms in the brain. I also work on the treatment of language deficits caused by disease of the brain (aphasia), for example by stroke.
My group uses the following experimental methods: MEG, EEG, fMRI, clinical behavioural investigation, neural network simulations and, in collaboration with other groups, TMS and ECoG. If time allows, we also use our own brains to generate new ideas about how the brain might manage to make the mouth speak and the mind understand.
Applications of doctorate students are welcome in all of our current areas of research.
