Abstract:
Clinically-derived cognitive models of depression have recently encountered considerable difficulties at both the empirical and theoretical levels. It is argued that such difficulties can be overcome by models that focus on the proximal setting conditions for the depression response and that draw more directly on the findings of experimental investigations. Within such models, the conflict that has existed between purely cognitive and more socially-oriented approaches to depression disappears.
