Abstract:
This chapter reviews research on deep dyslexia during the seven years intervening between the first and second editions of the book. Amongst the topics appearing in recent work on this pattern of disordered reading, the review pays particular attention to issues which are currently unresolved. These include (1) the relation of deep dyslexic reading to performance in other domains of language skill such as speaking and writing; (2) the relation amongst various symptoms of deep dyslexic reading, in particular whether these invariably co-occur; (3) the current status of the hypothesis that deep dyslexia reflects right-hemisphere reading; (4) whether deep dyslexia can be effectively treated; and (5) whether deep dyslexia, originally reported only as a form of acquired reading impairment, also can be observed in cases of developmental dyslexia. The chapter concludes with a bibliography of material on deep dyslexia published since the first edition of the book.
