Abstract:
A description of the varieyt of ways in which children hold their pens is an essential first step toward understanding the effects of different hand movements on the written trace. This paper reports on the first stage of a survey into the writing habits of English school children. Sets of pupils from schools using different teaching models and methods were tested and photographed in their classrooms engaged in a variety of writing tasks. The age groups studied were 7,9 and 15 years. A detailed picture of the most common features of penhold is provided along with an analysis of the relation between penhold and writing speed with factors such as handedness, sex and age taken into account.
