CBU Scientist Tom Manly will be performing science-based stand-up comedy at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe. Tom will be performing as part of Bright Club Scotland taking to the stage at the Stand in the Square (Venue 372) at 3:40 on August 13th. Other acts include Carla Washbourne (environmental science and public policy), Suzanne McEndoo (quantum physics), Nick Neasom (Linguistics) and Elaine Miller (physiotherapy). Tickets available here. There are two other Fringe Bright Club shows on 9th and 18th of August.
Various Bright Clubs have been set up around the UK with the aim of improving scientists’ ability to inform non-specialist audiences about the process and fruits of science and entertaining audiences who want to learn interesting things as well as (hopefully) laugh.
‘Seeing education and intellectual achievement celebrated in this way is great. The show pulls off the trick of coating facts with laughter, without patronising us in process. It’s accessible, irreverent and often pleasingly tongue-in-cheek…a hugely enjoyable way to boost your knowledge while having a laugh in an atmosphere brimming with goodwill.’ Fest
