Abstract:
Coma accounts for 3% of emergency hospital admissions, with causes ranging from the potentially treatable, such as epilepsy and certain drug overdoses to severe trauma and vascular insults, which will be fatal or leave the patient with irreversible brain damage. However, coma can be regarded as a potentially dangerous condition with a fatal outcome in a high proportion of patients. Accurate assessment is important for the institution of the most appropriate therapy.
