Abstract:
This paper is a brief report on the C S Myers Lecture presented at the Annual BPS Conference. It reviews evidence from normal readers of English, normal readers of Japanese and patients with acquired disorders of reading in English, all suggesting that translation of the written word to a phonological representation plays a major role in reading compre-hension.
