Extending the multiple-levels approach to word processing.

The paper argues that the multiple-levels approach to word processing given in Humphreys and Evett (1985) can cope with the evidence from the reading of languages which differ in their degree of regularity. It also agrees with Brown (1987) that the frequencies of print-to-sound correspondences need to be taken into account. The plea for analytic experiments no longer based on the over-simplistic distinctions made by the dual-route theory of reading is reiterated.
